The administration headquarters of Macedonia-Thrace Bank (Piraeus Bank Group) are located at the corner of Tsimiski and Ethnikis Amynis str. in Thessaloniki, on a plot of 1400m2 and cover a total building area of 11200m2. On the ground floor, the building houses the city’s central branch and offices. The lower basement (level -2) includes the bank’s treasure vaults and parking areas. Auxiliary areas are located on the upper basement (level -1). All upper floors house the bank’s offices, the 7th floor houses the assembly rooms and multi-functional halls and the 8th floor houses the presidential office, the board of directors’ conference room and three V.I.P. guest rooms.
The restoration works were conducted in order to strengthen the bearing structure and shield the building in case of an earthquake. A team of the project’s architects and engineers of DOMOTECHNIKI S.A. conducted studies about the building’s facades and decided to apply a tuff stone cladding, with a supply coming from the region of Skra. The cladding was constructed with the use of a special mounting system which guarantees very high resilience against harsh weather conditions and perfect earthquake resistance. Due to the existing structural characteristics of the building and therefore the lack of space for regular air ducts, the building’s air-conditioning system is based on an advanced VAV (variable air volume – dual duct) combined with the VRV (variable refrigerant volume) system. Special installations ensure perfect air-conditioning for all sensitive computer areas.
The layout of the office spaces follows an open plan. All floors are suspended, in order to provide the circulation of all heavy and low current networks (mains and switches, telephone and voice data, computer network cables and data). The spaces’ functional flexibility is enhanced by the construction of special movable partition walls, while soundpanels with reflectors and diffusers are installed in the assembly rooms and the multi-functional halls of the 7th floor.
It is worthwhile mentioning that landscaping works included also the revelation and display of part of the byzantine city wall relics. The building’s high architectural and construction quality, combined with the flexibility of the structural systems and the electromechanical networks (correlation and interdependence of natural and artificial lighting, independently controlled air-conditioning for each working space, advanced fire detection and extinguishing system), which form the central Building Management System (BMS), classify the Administration Building Headquarters of Macedonia-Thrace Bank as one of the “smart buildings” in Greece.
